Union County joins new council to aid economy

LEWISBURG- A joint effort among three counties has a goal of saving money. At the Union County Commissioners meeting today, commissioners decided to join forces with Montour and Northumberland counties to form a new committee to aid economic development.

Commissioners of the three counties recognize the changes in national and international market conditions and the newly established Economic Development Council of Central Pennsylvania will be for coordinating joint strategies for creating a system promoting inter-county cooperation.

Union County commissioners say that this new council is “long overdue,” and their move to the former Omega Bank building “couldn’t come at a better time,” since the building will keep economic and zoning committees under one roof as the new council begins its efforts help the economy. (Amy Knight)

Latest Pennsylvania news, sports, business and entertainment:

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania's chief justice says opposition to a new law giving judges, state lawmakers and others a pay raise is just a knee-jerk reaction. Supreme Court Chief Justice Ralph Cappy says he hasn't heard any convincing argument that the raises - approved by state lawmakers earlier this month - are inappropriate. Public outrage over the pay raise law passed July Seventh has focused on the Legislature, which approved raises ranging from 16 percent to 34 percent for its members. The law also increased Cappy's salary, as well as that of other state judges.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania's legislative payroll is now the most expensive in the nation because of a pay raise that state lawmakers gave themselves earlier this month. That's according to the Harrisburg-based policy analysis group, the Pennsylvania Economy League. The state's 253 lawmakers could earn nearly 20-point-five (M) million dollars in base salary alone this fiscal year. That figure that does not include outside income, additional salary for top legislative officers or the possibility that some lawmakers will refuse the raise. But according to the Pennsylvania Economy League, the base salary alone is enough to give the Pennsylvania Legislature the highest payroll --- more than the nearly 17 (M) million dollar base payroll in New York and nearly 12 (M) million dollars in California.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senator Rick Santorum yesterday praised President Bush's selection of John Roberts Junior to be a nominee for the U-S Supreme Court. Santorum, a Pennsylvania Republican, calls Roberts "brilliant" and "head and shoulders above the crowd." Senator Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican who chairs the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, has scheduled a news conference for today to discuss the nomination. Roberts has been on the U-S Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since June 2003 after being picked for that seat by Bush.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - The amount of trash imported into Pennsylvania in 2004 dropped for the third straight year but the Keystone state easily remained the nation's top destination for interstate waste shipments. State officials say high fuel costs are prompting waste haulers to switch some shipments to rail, diverting more waste away from Pennsylvania landfills, which have no direct rail service. But members of the trash-hauling industry say they are simply going where it's cheaper to dump their loads, like Virginia and Ohio. Trash imports to Pennsylvania last year dropped by 446-thousand tons, or about four percent, in 2004. At 10-point-one (M) million tons last year, Pennsylvania took two-point-three (M) million more tons of out-of-state trash than the second-place state, Virginia. Ninety percent of Pennsylvania's out-of-state waste came from New York and New Jersey.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Two Republican legislative leaders are suing to block a state agency's board from meeting privately to consider extending health-care benefits to same-sex couples and unmarried heterosexual couples who live together. House Majority Leader Sam Smith and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Brett Feese want Commonwealth Court to force the board to vote on the extension of benefits in a public meeting. Smith and Feese contend that a private meeting of the Employee Benefits Trust Fund board scheduled for Thursday would violate the state's Sunshine Act. They say the board would be taking official action that could result in additional costs to the state. Fund executive Tommy Teague has no comment on the lawsuit. Contracts ratified in 2003 by unions representing tens of thousands of state workers call for providing family leave and sick leave for domestic partners, regardless of sexual orientation. But the employees benefits fund has yet to authorize those benefits.
